Hey Chris, how's it going?

The training (for another Everest Challenge) isn't easy, but it doesn't take that long to recover from a single hard training day... I usually go for a ride the next day, just not as fast or as far. It's cumulative fatigue that gets to me. After a couple weeks of three hard training days during the week (shorter rides but faster, with intervals and/or a fast group ride) and a couple long rides on the weekend, I need an easy week.

Long races on the other hand can be pretty hard on me. I've had some where I needed two days off afterwards to get back to some semblance of normal. And after an Everest Challenge I'm useless on the bike for about a week.

Hi Eric, long time no talk. Your rides and reports are inspiring. Could you answer a question or two? I'm wondering how long you need to recover from these rides. 29k in a week is unfathomable to me. Has this sort of thing become easy to you? Do you think you've adapted in a way that allows you to recover more quickly between rides? I realize that what's hard to me would be easy to you, so... assume you did a hard ride, hit a PR, etc. How long until you're ready for another hard workout?

Thanks...
Chris

Hi Ryan, yes I remember you. I'm spending most of my time cycling instead of motorcycling too. I wish I had time to do both.

If I'd had the 11t I might have been able to make it through the flat part and around to the climb with the lead group. It still would have been hard for me as I am not very fast on flat ground but if I'd been smart and hiding in the group I could have stuck in there. The group split on the larger climb on the second lap (Holger was trying to cause some pain) and I probably would not have made that split.

Interesting that you found the limitation to compact gearing. Think you could have survived it with an 11t?

BTW, remember me from MO circa 1996? Brent's summer intern from Canada?

My normal gearing- 50/34 and 12-27. The 27 was plenty low enough for me, I barely used it.

Eric, I was the M45+ guy you passed at the top of stage #2 w/ 400 meters to go. I was so dead, the last 5 miles of stage #2. I miscalculated the distance and was fried. I ended up walking w/ about 2K to go on a few of the really steeps.
Good racing, and writing. Hope to see you again this year (maybe ;-)

I remember you! I have written him, and haven't heard back. It's weird, because he and I had a lengthy email exchange around the Mt. Whitney race, which I rode as well. I had been really impressed with the organization, etc., of the races.

We should all politely email Steve and ask him to submit results to USCF.
BTW I was on the black Cervelo R3-SL... we rode together for a while near the top of the first climb on day 1. I hope I'll be riding as well as you are in another 10 years.

Hey Eric, I was at that race, too. No results yet. What's up with that? Have you emailed the race director, by any chance? It was a great ride, but it sure would be nice to have the results posted. Wasn't Onion Valley just the greatest climb ever?
